Fascia

Fascia is the vertical finishing board mounted at the point where the roof meets the outer walls of the house, typically supporting the gutter system and creating a finished appearance.

Fascia boards run horizontally along the roof edge, capping off the ends of rafters or trusses and providing a mounting surface for gutters. This visible board creates a finished transition between the roof and the walls while protecting the roof structure from weather exposure. Fascia boards typically range from 1x6 to 1x8 inches and can be made from wood, composite materials, PVC, or aluminum-wrapped wood for enhanced durability.

Why It Matters

The fascia board bears significant weight from your gutter system when filled with rainwater or snow melt—a common Denver concern during spring runoff. Rotted or damaged fascia can't support gutters properly, leading to sagging, separation, and water damage to siding and foundation. The fascia also provides the finished appearance of your roofline, visible from the street. Properly installed fascia with appropriate flashing protects rafter ends from moisture infiltration that causes rot and pest entry.

Common Materials and Applications

  • Cedar or pressure-treated lumber: Traditional choice requiring regular painting
  • PVC or composite fascia: Rot-proof, low-maintenance alternatives
  • Aluminum-wrapped fascia: Wood core with protective metal cladding
  • Fiber cement boards: Durable, fire-resistant option
  • Proper installation includes drip edge flashing above fascia to direct water into gutters
